If we make plans to meet again AKA a date the other guy really just wants to have sex, no matter what we have put on the agenda. I was waiting to get a haircut today and the guys waiting on either side of me at the salon were both going through hookup apps the entire time they were sitting there. Or, my favorite, preferred sexual position. I joined a sports league hoping to meet people in some other way. All we do after playing is go out and drink. Or go to a restaurant, where everyone is looking at hookup apps on their phones while we wait for the food.

Probably the most well-traveled member of the group this year, Thabiso will also undoubtedly benefit from this new experience, as she is acutely aware of the similar and unique ways in which race and other social, cultural, and political markers—like gender and sexuality—are constructed throughout the world. Most recently, when Jade submitted College Grrrl along with her group members in FG , I realized that her curiosity and passion for intellect had not waned.
She was full of personality then and that fact remains today. They just continue to write ineffective questions. But Lyric is different. For that reason and so many others, I was happy she applied. In a lot of ways, Samantha reminds me of myself. She was bored with high school by the time she got to college, so she has a lot of ambition and drive. Willa served a Journalist for College Grrrl alongside Spencer , and really illustrated her knack for conducting analyses through multiple relevant frameworks in order to produce the most salient examinations possible.

RSS link Few topics send the media into a panic like the idea of hookup culture on college campuses. But are college students actually having more sex than their parents did a generation ago? Research suggests the answer is no. Lisa Wade, a sociologist at Occidental College, says something has changed, though: In today’s hookup culture, developing an emotional attachment to a casual sex partner is one of the biggest breaches of social norms.
For her new book, American Hookup: The New Culture of Sex on Campus , Wade spent 5 years investigating hookup culture on American colleges and universities. In this culture, she says, there’s a dichotomy between meaningless and meaningful sex, and students have to go out of their way to “perform meaninglessness. This leads to seemingly contradictory situations, such as people who only have sex with partners they’re not interested in, and friends being meaner to each other after developing a sexual relationship.
This Valentine’s Day, Lisa Wade talks with us about hookup culture and investigates the complex social rules surrounding casual sex on American college campuses.

History[ edit ] The rise of hookups, a form of casual sex , has been described by evolutionary biologist Justin Garcia and others as a “cultural revolution” that had its beginnings in the s. As a result, Garcia and other scholars argue that young adults are able to reproduce physiologically but are not psychologically or socially ready to ‘settle down’ and begin a family. Research on hookups is not seated within a singular disciplinary sphere; it sits at the crossroads of theoretical and empirical ideas drawn from a diverse range of fields, including psychology, anthropology, sociology, biology, medicine, and public health.
It is hard to make sense of the hookup culture with understanding why it exists in society and why individuals participate in the culture.

Venker was disinvited by the students who had asked her to speak in the first place, not by the college. I think it was just getting a lit bit over the top. You are giving those who spout violence the money that so desperately needs to be funneled to black and brown trans femme communities, to people who are leading the revolution, who are surviving in the streets, who are dying in the streets. Know, you are dipping your hands in their blood, Zach Wood.
And even if it was obligated to make those guarantees, student groups would still be free to change their minds about who they want to bring to campus, as long as the administration did not interfere. In general, the College should not allow speech that challenges fundamental human rights and devalues people based on identity markers, like being a woman.

Latin America’s Contemporary Environmental Literature Last offered Fall “It is not by coincidence that our societies are both racist and anti-ecological,” wrote the Chilean sociologist Fernando Mires in his now-classic study, The Discourse of Nature. This tutorial explores works of contemporary literature that implicitly and explicitly link Latin America’s ongoing environmental crisis to the region’s long and multi-layered history of colonialism: Representing a wide variety of geographies, literary styles and ideological perspectives, these writers nevertheless converge in challenging us to consider the effects of environmental crisis within structures of power that are radically unequal at the local, national, and global levels; and to recognize that consciousness of environmental vulnerability can prompt new forms of inclusion and community as well as exclusion.
Topics to be explored also include the role of indigenous cosmologies in contemporary environmental politics, the place of urban ecologies within the environmental imaginary, and the ongoing debates among academic critics and others regarding the scope and methodologies of ecocriticism as an approach to Latin American literature. Students have the option of tutorial in Spanish or in English; partners will be assigned accordingly. Each tutorial pair will meet with me for one hour during the week, during which time we will discuss a 5-page paper that one of the partners has submitted the night before.
