Benevolent Magic and Living Prayer (Feminine Science Series, Book 1) (Feminine Science Series, Book 1) (Secrets of Feminine Science) [PDF]

by Robert Shapiro
Where on earth to start? A detailed review of what I struggled with in this book would turn out bigger than the book itself. This is a very short piece of writing, even shorter when you take out the many, many repetitions. It’s also not beautifully written, and could have used an editor, or a better editor.
I’ve not read a great many new age books, so I don’t know quite how this fits or compares with other work out there. However, it troubles me to read something that talks in broad and vague terms about magic and prayer, without getting into how either of these really fit in a person’s world view. There’s an admirable enough desire to include all here, but there’s also a lack of content. It is possible to be inclusive while considering how things fit together. It is important to root what we do in our world view, for life to make sense, and to know what our ethical framework is.
Now, the idea of benevolent magic is hard to argue with, it’s all about seeking the benevolence and recognising that we should be asking for what we need, not what we want. Having read the book, I still have no idea what a ‘living prayer’ is that makes it distinctly different from other forms of prayer, save possibly the idea that you offer it up to Creator rather than another named deity. It’s also the case that the book focuses exclusively on the kind of praying that is about asking for something, which other religious writers tend to view as the least important aspect of prayer tradition.
If you’ve never prayed, and would like to, and don’t really have a faith, just a general belief in something unspecified, and just want a small, warm, fluffy sort of book that will fit in your pocket and not hurt your brain at all, then this may be the book for you. It means well, but it’s all surface and very little substance.
